What’s Included in the Windsor Castle Entry Ticket

The State Apartments

The State Apartments are the ceremonial heart of Windsor Castle and the highlight of any visit. These lavishly furnished rooms — originally built for Charles II and his queen, Catherine of Braganza, in the 1670s — are still used by the Royal Family today for official state occasions, investitures, and diplomatic receptions.

The visitor route takes you through a sequence of rooms of increasing grandeur, culminating in the magnificent St. George’s Hall — a 55-metre banqueting room where State Dinners for up to 160 guests are held. Along the route you will see some of the finest works in the Royal Collection, including paintings by Holbein, Van Dyck, Rubens, Rembrandt, and Canaletto, intricate woodcarvings by Grinling Gibbons, and a remarkable collection of European arms and armour.

St. George’s Chapel

St. George’s Chapel is included in the standard entry ticket and is one of the most significant Gothic buildings in England. Built between the 14th and 16th centuries, it serves as the spiritual home of the Order of the Garter — the oldest and most senior order of chivalry in Britain — and as the burial place of ten monarchs, including Henry VIII, Charles I, and Queen Elizabeth II.

The chapel gained international attention in 2018 as the venue for the wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip are interred in the King George VI Memorial Chapel within St. George’s Chapel, making it one of the most visited spaces at Windsor.

Important: St. George’s Chapel is closed to general visitors on Sundays, when it is open for worship only. Plan your visit accordingly if seeing the chapel — and particularly the royal burial site — is a priority.

Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House

Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House is included in the entry ticket and is one of Windsor Castle’s most distinctive attractions. Completed in 1924 to a design by architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, it is the largest and most famous dolls’ house in the world, built to a scale of 1:12.

Every detail was created by the finest craftspeople and artists of the day — over 1,500 contributors in total. The house features working electricity and running water, a fully stocked wine cellar with real miniature bottles, a garage with working engines, and original miniature artworks commissioned specifically for the house. It is as compelling for adults as it is for children.

The Multimedia Audio Guide

The free multimedia guide is included with every admission ticket. Introduced by His Majesty The King, it covers the State Apartments, St. George’s Chapel, and the castle precincts with rich historical commentary. Available in ten languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Mandarin Chinese, and British Sign Language. The Castle Precincts & Grounds

The entry ticket includes free access to the castle’s outdoor areas — the Lower Ward, Middle Ward, and Upper Ward — as well as views of the Round Tower, the Moat Garden, the Horseshoe Cloister, and the approach to St. George’s Chapel. The castle grounds cover 13 acres and are worth exploring independently before or after the indoor visitor route.

Semi-State Rooms (Seasonal — Autumn/Winter Only)

From approximately October to March each year, five additional rooms known as the Semi-State Rooms are added to the visitor route at no extra charge. These were the private apartments of George IV, richly decorated in Gothic, classical, and rococo styles and containing some of the finest 18th-century English and French works of art. They are not accessible during summer months. The Semi-State Rooms are expected to reopen in autumn 2026 following restoration work.

What Is Not Included

• Photography inside the castle: Photography is not permitted inside the State Apartments, the Semi-State Rooms, or St. George’s Chapel. Outdoor photography in the precincts is permitted.
• Food and drink: The Undercroft Café is on-site but is not included in the ticket price.

Is the Windsor Castle Entry Ticket Worth It?

Yes — for nearly all visitors. Windsor Castle is not merely a preserved historical site: it is a living, working royal palace, and that distinction is palpable throughout the visit. The State Apartments are still used for ceremonies of state. The chapel still holds regular services. The castle still flies the Royal Standard when the King is in residence.

The entry ticket provides access to one of the world’s great royal art collections, some of the most architecturally significant ecclesiastical and ceremonial spaces in Britain, and a site with close to a thousand years of continuous royal occupation. At approximately £32 in advance, it represents solid value for the quality and quantity of what is on offer.

The ticket is particularly strong value in autumn and winter, when the Semi-State Rooms are added to the route, and on days when the Changing of the Guard ceremony takes place inside the castle. First-time visitors should allow a minimum of 2.5 to 3 hours.
